Magnificent or not so?

For a friend's farewell dinner I suggested we eat at Magnificent Fish and Chips...I had never been there before but I had heard many good things about the food and was eager for an occasion to pop up...so the minute she asked me where we should go I lept at the chance to suggest...

But after eating I wished I had not...

I would say the food was good...but not spectacular...and definitely not worth the amount we spent on it...the whole meal for 3ppl came up to about RM150...and keep in mind we didn't go for expensive dishes with exotic ingredients...and we didn't even have alcoholic drinks...what we did have was 2 fish and chips, 1 chicken leek pie, 2 ice waters, and 2 orange juices...do you think the price makes sense for what we had?

Also, keep in mind that for the 2 fish and chips we chose the cheapest type of fish...this is a restaurant where you can choose between all sorts of fish...barramundi...parrotfish...etc. Imagine if we had gone for the top of the line fish!?! We could have been looking at a RM200 bill sans dessert or drinks!

But since this is a food blog...I'll stop complaining about the high prices and tell you a little about the food...

I liked my fish and chips...the batter was crispy but the fish was flaky and tender...the chips were amazing with a splash of malt vinegar...R had the same thing and also enjoyed it...

My friend liked her chicken leek pie just fine...although she did comment that there was too much leek both inside the pie and around it.... we also couldn't quite figure out if the topping on the pie was potato or not...it looks like it...tastes like it...but the texture is weird...almost too light to be a potato...

The overall verdict...while we liked the food...it's probably not a place we'll think of going back to. Price is a major factor...but even putting that aside...I don't see the meal as being craveworthy. I highly doubt I'll be breaking out in sweats if I don't have fish and chips from that restaurant in particular. I can have a decent fish and chips anywhere else...infact I have a great recipe of my own...

Magnificent Fish and Chips is more of a place you visit once...and probably never again...

i've eaten there before, but yeah, it's like you sd you go once n probably that's it... mainly cos of the price factor.

but aside from that, the concept of the place is quite different; as in you order off a chalk board on the wall, you choose your fish, how you want it done... and i remember this fact clearly as well.. my fish & chips came in a basket lined w newspaper.. of course, but it was a foreign paper... either british or american... can't recall.

haha! mebbe that's what your paying for as well.. for this newspaper to be flown in to msia...lol!
