The Departure Lounge and a Detour

When reading Lyrical Lemongrass' Review on The Departure Lounge I was instantly intrigued! The all day breakfast sounded like a deal too good to be true: Turkey Ham, Beef Bacon, Mushrooms, Fish Fingers, Pancake, Scrambled Eggs, Chicken Sausages AND Bread for RM12.90 (USD3.70)...pick your jaw up from the ground because it's true...I saw the menu with my very own eyes...it's certainly a good value for money outlet in these times with an economic recession looming.

I had every intention of going for the breakfast menu...but when I got there I saw a Philly Cheese Steak Panini on the menu and in just that split second my mind took a little detour...see, when I lived in Pittsburgh I used to eat at a wonderful place known as Uncle Sam's Gourmet Subs...they have the most delicious subs on this planet no ifs, ands, or buts about it! My two favourite subs were the Special Italian loaded with cuts of Genoa salami, soft salami, capicolla, and provolone cheese and their specialty, the famous Mushroom Cheese Steak loaded with thin strips of steak, mushrooms, grilled onions, and provolone cheese. The bread was always just right…lightly toasted on the grill but not overly crisp…the meats that were loaded on the sub were always full of flavour and were grilled lightly giving the edges a bit of that caramelised crunch…the cheese always melted just right …absolute perfection!

So this explains where my general love for subs originated…and while Philadelphia claims to have the best cheese steak sub in the US…I’ll be the first(and I’m sure not the last) to tell you that I prefer a Pittsburgh Uncle Sam’s Sub any day. However, seeing as neither of these subs are found in Malaysia…seeing a Philly Cheese Steak on the menu was like striking the lottery.

By now I’m sure you can see why I took a detour from the original plan to try out the all day breakfast and I got myself a Philly Cheese Steak Panini instead.

While it wasn’t anything close to what I was expecting (to be fair to the outlet my expectations when it comes to cheese steak subs are quite high) I would say that it was a nice tasty sandwich and surprisingly it was the corn chips on the side that stood out….now those were good!

The Departure Lounge might however want to consider renaming their Philly Cheese Steak Panini though as it could leave ex-Pittsburgh/Philly inhabitants who are expecting the real thing a tad bit disappointed.

I'm looking forward to going back and trying out their breakfast and their other sandwiches as this little cafe is very cosy and inviting. They also have a great selection of world wide travel guides sitting in their little library by the mock fireplace. They don't call it the departure lounge for nothing!

Hehe...perhaps they're hoping that their customers are a little less well-travelled, eh?

It's a cute setup with the travel guides. It's a shame the sandwich wasn't as good as you hoped.

LL - Haha...I guess so...it wasn't bad though...I guess I was just expecting a tiny taste of what I miss so much :)

Lorraine - Sigh...you're telling me...there isn't a place to get a great sub here...unless you count subway which to me doesn't count :P

Arwen - It is a very cute place...and while the sandwich wasn't as good as I hoped I would go back and eat something else..I was just hoping for something to satisfy my food memory.
